From local sketchbooks to international runways, a young designer redefines men’s fashion with heart and heritage.
Joselito Cabungcal is a name quickly gaining traction in the global fashion scene. At just 23 years old, this Davao-based designer has already showcased his work in fashion capitals like New York, Paris, Dubai, London, Singapore, and Los Angeles—a remarkable feat for someone who began by sketching designs for barangay competitions.
“I don’t compete with others,” he says. “I compete with myself—one collection at a time.” – Joselito Cabungcal
Joselito’s path wasn’t paved with privilege—it was carved through grit, creativity, and an unwavering belief in his craft. Despite financial constraints, he pursued a Diploma in Fashion Technology at the Philippine Women’s College of Davao, where he honed his skills and found his voice as a designer.
His first collection? Facemasks—created during the pandemic and shared online. These early designs caught the attention of Gleizl Joy Soo, founder of the House of Musa, a fashion enterprise that champions the indigenous Musa fabric from Davao del Norte. Joselito was invited to join as an in-house designer in 2021, marking the beginning of his international ascent.
Joselito specializes in menswear, a category he believes is underexplored in Filipino fashion. His creations are known for their structural precision, cultural storytelling, and modern elegance. He integrates Musa fabric into his designs—not just as a textile, but as a symbol of identity and advocacy.
His work challenges norms while remaining deeply personal. “I don’t compete with others,” he says. “I compete with myself—one collection at a time.”
In 2023, Joselito won the Philippine National Skills Competition by TESDA, further validating his talent and dedication. He’s also represented Region XI in the WorldSkills Competition, and continues to inspire young creatives with his message: “Don’t limit yourself. Keep creating. Focus on improving your craft.”
